A thermometer is a measuring device for determining the temperature. Many thermometers are based on the temperature dependence of the expansion of liquids, gases or solids, whose expansion coefficient is known. Others use the relationship of the electrical conductivity with temperature. However, other physical effects, which have a temperature dependency, can be used to construct a thermometer. Each thermometer comprises a temperature sensor (for example, a substance that suitably thermal expansion shows) and a display device (scale or display). Thermometers are calibrated based on fixed temperature points or against a certified reference thermometer.
